The combined companies will operate under the Welocalize name and brand with corporate headquarters located in Frederick, MD. Operations will continue in Connect’s facilities in Dublin, Ireland. E. Tech Tip

Why Does Testing Take So Long?

Clients often wonder why it takes so long to test their products; why can't we quickly clear out bugs; why do we sometimes have duplicates and why is status sometimes missed?

Well, please keep the following in mind.  At a minimum every bug has 9 steps from identification to final validation, and let’s assume that a decent percentage has a couple of cycles.  To put this into context with a sample project:

Sample Project

Languages:  20

Test cases: 1700 test cases per locale/34,000 validated test cases for the project

Bugs Identified: 190 bugs per language/3800 total bugs for all locales

Quality Metric: 1 bug per 9 test cases

Life of the bug:

In this project if you take the total number bugs multiplied by the average touch points per bug, there were roughly 34,000 touch points in the QA phase alone for this  project.

Sometimes a little context helps us understand what takes so long.....

Quarterly Summary

2005 was a great year for our company!  Our most significant achievement was our successful merger with Connect.

This merger creates excellent opportunities for our clients and staff.  For our clients, we can offer increased scale and capability; and for our staff, there are interesting new opportunities as we continue to grow.

I am happy to report that our record growth trend continued in 2005.  Q4 2005 marked our 16th consecutive quarter of growth, and we achieved a 37% increase in total revenue over 2004.

Thank you for a great year!

Localizing Audio, Video, and Graphics

Flash files generally have some kind of video component, and very frequently feature audio that complements, if not correspond directly to, the video.  As a result it is important to plan for audio and video localization in any Flash localization project.  Three elements of a Flash movie must be analyzed when planning the localization process:

·         Motion picture video (possibly with audio) that must be re-shot

·         Software simulations that must be captured on localized machines

·         Voice-over audio that will need to be recorded for each locale

In the case of motion picture video having to be re-shot, it is important to take into consideration the file size of the current files.

Software simulations can be captured using software such as Camtasia, which has recording, editing, effects, and production capabilities.

Voice-over audio recording requires a sound production facility, including a sound booth, high-quality compression microphone, pre-amp, and recording software such as Adobe Audition.

If graphic content needs to be localized, list all elements requiring localization in a spreadsheet, including the dimensions of all graphics.  Generate localized graphics using the highest quality export settings during production.  Note that Flash re-compresses graphic content at export time, such that JPG images may appear distorted on export.  PNG images generally work well, and can be exported with transparency, which is useful when layering graphics.
